Storytime with Guy Mendilow 1/5
Directing/Producing/Performing during the Pandemic
Some of the scenes in this performance are from Radio Play(s), a new series unpacking a timely theme through stories, whether told through the spoken word or through music.
Radio Play(s) was born as a response to the COVID1-19 pandemic. Producing and directing it meant a few “firsts.” For example, the complexity and risks of travel for out-of-state artists, together with the health considerations of some local GME artists, rendered it impossible to work with longtime GME personnel and standard configuration of woodwinds, percussion, violin and voices. This, in turn, led to this first effort at writing for a string quartet, in turn opening a first opportunity to team up with some of the string artists you now see onstage. Radio Play(s) also marked my first time playing piano on a performing arts stage. The importance of a rigorous COVID safety plan also led to a new type of production schedule: Radio Play(s) is, so far, the only time a show I have written was learned in a day and filmed the next morning, and the first show I have created deliberately intended to be virtual.
